Adventures in Copyrights: Flat Attack

You might think Salavatore Ferragamo's classic flats are a little old ladyish - but I've been seeing them on the feet of some most fashionable girls. They come in a rainbow of colors, have proper soles unlike most ballet flats, and give the most casual outfit a polished finish - basically they're perfect for city living. Nine West agrees. We've abandoned our tendency to copy uber-trendy, straight from the runway shoes and opted for a more classic and practical counterfeit. If you have extra time on your hands, you could even take the time to get the metal plate in the middle of the bow engraved. Either shoe would be adorable with cut-off denim shorts and an oversized tee, or even a floral mini-dress this spring.
And honestly, I'd never know which one you're wearing.

(Bonus points if you actually know which shoe is which...)

Peter Som Wants Your Cash

We know getting a ticket to fashion week can be a little irritating sometimes.
If you don't work at a huge glossy, you have to request the ticket, request it again, request that someone actually look at your request, rsvp, etc. Peter Som feels your pain, and so he's going to make it a little easier for you (but at a price, of course.)
American Express is sponsoring an encore act to Som's show, open to Amex card holders, on Wednesday, February 6 at 9pm. But you have to cough up $150 for a seat. All proceeds benefit the CFDA - and since there are only 700 seats available, I suggest doing this right now if you're interested. I'm not sure how I'd feel going to a Fashion Week show that I paid to see. But on the other hand, it'll be longer and include some personal time with Peter himself, so maybe it's actually the smarter way to go.

Would You Wear Colored Mascara?

Someone recently asked me if I ever change my look, hair and make-up speaking. I was a little taken aback until I realized that I really don't - I've been doing the "natural" thing my whole life, using only neutral makeup. So I decided to make a few changes:
First, inspired by Marni's runways, I purchased a pink lipstick, and even wore it during the day. Then I even threw on some sparkles a la Zac Posen for effect. Now I'm thinking about buying a bright mascara instead of my usual black. Colored mascara's been popping up on the runway for a few years now, starting with blue at Dior, gold at Gucci and this season's white lashes at Erin Fetherston. MAC has a bright teal that would be perfect for spring, and I've read a billion times that blue mascara is supposed to "make eyes pop" as it's always put, but I can't help but feel like I might end up looking like a little raver who forgot that she's supposed to be at work. Would you wear colored mascara? Or is this just too out there for everyday life?

Denim: Classic or Trendy?

"Are skinny jeans over?"
Our trend-obsessed buyers might have gone overboard on the wideleg trend, and they might have forgotten which season we're in. More than one confused shopper wondered how they were supposed to tuck the massive flares into their winter boots.
I understand their frustration - while I treasure my high-waisted widelegs, and rocked them with massive platforms all summer/fall, I've found them impossible to transition into winter since I detest boots under jeans.
When skinny jeans hit the states, shoppers groaned that they were too unflattering to have any real staying power. But their versatility has made them more than a passing trend, leaving a gap in the market for novelty denim ideas.
Meanwhile, plenty of women seem to stick to the one style they feel works for them, buying multiple pairs of what looks and feels perfect instead of jumping onto the current denim bandwagon. It's not exactly the most exciting shopping method, but maybe looking good does sometimes trump looking "on trend".
Are you still wearing your skinnies? Or have you fully embraced the trendiest denim out there?

Such a Little Punk!

Two years ago, New York Magazine explored the curious phenomenon of children-as-hipster-accessories.
Among the shocking discoveries - that kids don't like their parents' indie rock; that kids don't like their parents' wacky haircuts - there was also the notion that kids' clothing doesn't translate into the too-cool adult world, especially without an infant line from Urban Outfitters.
But all that is about to change, thanks to Ben Sherman.
The British sportswear brand just launched Ben Sherman Kids, a wee line that makes skinny jeans, stovepipe suits, and tons of houndstooth available to first graders.
They probably still won't like their moms' Sex Pistols albums, but oh well... the conversion from Spongebob to *Stellastarr has to start somewhere. This will make things much easier! Excited for kids someday!
